Question about using combat maneuvers

I was wondering if I have to say the specific manuever I'm using before I even perform my atack roll, or if the manuevers are triggered by events.  The way they read out makes them sound like they are triggered by events, such  as" When you hit a creature with a weapon attack", or "When a creature misses you with a melee attack."  It sounds like I have to wait for these events to occur before choosing the manuever I use, and expending the superiority dice to use it.  If anyone here could clarify this a bit for me, I would really appreciate it.

Most maneuvers can only be used under certain circumstances or events. Each maneuvers can only be used "when..." they say they can and so you must wait for the right moment to do so. To the exception of Feinting Attack and Rally which can be used anytime on your turn.

Commander’s Strike: When you take the Attack action on your turn...

Disarming Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack...

Distracting Strike: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack...

Evasive Footwork: When you move...

Feinting Attack: (anytime) on your turn...

Goading Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack,..

Lunging Attack: When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn...

Maneuvering Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack...

Menacing Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack

Parry: When another creature damages you with a melee attack...

Precision Attack: When you make a weapon attack roll against a creature...

Pushing Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack...

Rally: (anytime) on your turn...

Riposte: When a creature misses you with a melee attack...

Sweeping Attack: When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack,...

Trip Attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack...

Yes, you have to wait.

That said, it also means you don't waste dice trying to trip someone then roll a 1 on your attack.

Thank you very much.  My DM and I were interpreting the rules differntly, so thanks for the clarification.
