Sorry if these have been covered elsewhere, but a couple of questions...

Charge

Is there a charge maneuver somewhere in the book.  I flipped through and could not seem to locate one.  I found the "Dash" maneuver, which allows you to double your speed, but could not find a "charge" maneuver.

Casting from Melee, Casting Defensive and Opportunity Attacks

Can you cast a spell in melee?  I found the rules for firing from melee, that's easy enough, but what about casting a spell that has no specific targeting rules, can you cast those in melee?  Healing Word, for example, has a range of 60ft, but it's not a "ranged attack" (no disadvantage to be imposed).  Can a cleric cast this spell on an ally in range, or on himself, while in melee?  Does that provoke a recation (opportunity attack)?

If you could provide page numbers to direct me to, that would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

1. Charging is a feat. It grants you an Attack or shove as a bonus action if you Dash as your action, and gives a hefty bonus if you move in a straight line before you Attack or shove.

2. There is no penalty for casting spells in melee, only for making ranged Attacks in melee.

Charger feat page 165

Ranged attacks are cast at disadvantage if there is an enemy combatent adjacent (within 5 feet).  I always assumed that included ranged attack spells.  Page 195

Without a rule book in front of me, it used to be that casting while threatened (adjacent opponent, or one within reach) called for an Opportunity Attack, however that was often mitigated if the component of the spell was verbal only. Not sure how that applies to 5E, so I might just be mucking everything up.

That said, doesn't concentration put a character provide advantage to an attacker? It leads me to believe that it would otherwise be a bad idea to cast in the middle of combat. But this isn't RAW at all -- just speculation.

Simple answer: No, casting spells (of any sort) does not provoke opportunity attacks (the new name for “attacks of opportunity”...)

Unlike the long list in 3E, there is only one thing in 5E provokes opportunity attacks: Moving out of the reach of a hostile creature.

(Unless you have the Polearm Master feat)

@Illithid: Thanks for clarifying. I'm still barely getting a hang of 5E! It's amazing to realize how far Magic-Users have come. Raise your hand if you remember the days when you could cast one Magic Missile and be done for the day, able to rely only on your d4 hp and a staff!

In my last session, my newbie Sorcerer managed to set fire to the family home of another player using nothing but a cantrip!

(She shot a flamebolt out of the window of the village pub to intimidate a royal guard)

They are learning so quickly!
