| #1transmission89Jul 29, 2014 7:15:01 | Hey all, am currently playing the starter set (and loving it!!) as the Wizard.
In the last session, I got a couple of items that I have questions about.
1) I've got the staff of defence. It says I can use 1 charge for Mage armour or two charges for shield. If I cast Mage armour using the staff, do I stil have to concentrate or am I free to use that concentration for another spell.
2) I also acquired a scroll of fireball. It is a level 3 spell on my class list that I can't cast yet, so I need to make a check to see if I can cast it. (Ability vs dc10 + spell level. So I will be making an intelligence check. Do I add my proficiency bonus to this check (as I am a wizard and should be prof in casting stuffs) or is it just d20+ int mod vs DC?
thanks for any help offered. |

2) You don't add your prof bonus unless something tells you to; I don't have the book handy, but I don't think you add your prof bonus to the scroll check. |

This will help with the session tonight. |

The Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure obviously assumes a maximum of 5 players (since that's all the pregens it includes). My home group sometimes has as many as 8 players. Are there guidelines anywhere for how to scale the encounters? |

| (Reply to #4)Dyndrilliac | Personally I disagree regarding your second question. I don't have any rules from the basic PDF explicitly supporting my view, but I also didn't see any language explicitly contradicting it either: Your proficiency bonus generally applies whenever you make a d20 roll doing some action you are proficient at. Wizards are proficient at spellcasting, and Fireball is a class spell for Wizards. Therefore, Wizards add their proficiency bonus to spellcasting ability checks to cast scrolls of Fireball. |

| #10jaelisAug 08, 2014 8:59:17 | I think the dyndrilliac's argument is that a scroll is sort of a tool, so if you are proficient with scrolls, you would add your prof bonus to checks with them.
However, to my knowledge it never says that wizards (or anyone else) is "proficient" with scrolls. I don't believe that scrolls are a thing you can be proficient with, you can just use them or not. |
| #11TrueManiekAug 08, 2014 11:35:19 | Maybe there will be a feat or something that will give a proficiency when using magic items (scrolls, wand and stuff) PS: Can non spellcaster classes also use scrolls, if I remember correctly they could in playtest materials? |
