Gents,

I'd like to know if a racial trait can overcome the 20 limit of the atribute, since THERE IS NO place in PHB or DMG saying that not, the thing is all the time is mentioned about buying ability scores with either point in the begining or with progress they MAKE CLEAR 20 is the cap, but no where is saying SPECOFIC that a race can't overcome this limit with its racial trait.

Somehow make sense, since an half-orc or mountain Dwaf are stonger than elfs or humans they should keep this feature even in their Epitome. So I'd like to know if it proceed or not and I'd love by an official way, since I'm discussing it in FB forums and not one showed my any real evidence that it can overcome the 20 limit with racial trait and if you take for instance the D&D 3.5 the epitome was 18, but an elf with +2 in desterity and it can reach 20.

Kind regards,

If you made a racial trait that said "you can get up to 22 STR from Ability Score Increases instead of the normal max of 20," then...yes, you're already house ruling...so you can override any rule you want? I'm not sure I understand the question...

Or, I guess if you made a race with +4 STR, then rolled an 18 STR with then, you'd end up with over 20 STR. Don't know off the top of my head if the rules disallow that, since they're written with the assumption that the best you can do is a rolled 18 + 2 racial. But again, you go changing rules around, it doesn't make much sense to ask if the rules "allow" that, since you're deliberately adding stuff to them.

Beyond First Level (phb p16)

When your character gains a level, his or her class often grants additional features, as detailed in the class description. Some o f these features allow you to increase your ability scores, either increasing two scores by 1 each or increasing one score by 2. You can’t increase an ability score above 20.

Without houseruling racial stats cannot overcome the 20 cap because the highest result for a stat you can get on character creation is 20. Not due to any restriction, but becsuse it's the maximum.

I think what he is trying to say/do, is create a distinction between your 'rolled' stat and the 'racially adjusted' stat. So you could start with a 14 Str played as a 16 because 1/2 Orc.  Increase it 3 times to a 20, played as a 22 because 1/2 orc.

This, however, still doesn't work.  You don't have two stats, in the above example your Str is 16... period.  You can increase it twice to 20, and then start looking for Belts of Giant Str.
