Ranger pet HD question

Since it has been stated in the errata that a beast master's pet may expend hit die on a short rest does the pet gain HD as the ranger gains levels or just retain the default HD?

I think by RAW it would only have its default HD. Thats ofcourse pretty lame when the lvl 20 rangers pet hawk only heals 1d4 hp when its lacking 79hp after a tough fight.

Id personally rule that it has the same number of HD as the ranger. Most likely as the number of ranger lvls and not character lvl.

Good question...

 

I would say that since a beast companion's hp is one of two possibles, then the answer might also be one of two possibles:

If its hp maximum equals its normal maximum, its HD equals its normal HD.

If its hp maximum equals 4*ranger level, its number of HD equals the ranger's number of HD.

 

I think the beast master subclass needs a revision.  Hopefully it's something they're working on.
