When a ranger casts Hail of thorns does the spell effect apply to every arrow launched if the ranger is doing volley or only the first arrow?

I think it just means the next time a ranged attack hits - within the 1 minute duration of the spell - it deals the extra damage (Dex save). If the ranger did not attack for a few rounds after casting and hit, then it would do the 1d10 extra damage. If s/he attacked straight away (the spell is a bonus action) it would do the 1d10 extra damage (adjust for higher levels, ofc ourse). In any case, it only does it once in that 1 minute duration of the spell. Volley would still only do 1d10 extra damage on the first hit.

Ok,

So the spell is cast. Only the ranged attack that hits first creates the effect. All others that miss or hit after the effect have no effect.

Thanks
