| #1ThorgeirSep 29, 2014 17:48:18 | Maybe I'm trying to read this one too hard.
In the PH on page 93 under Defensive Tactics , Multiattack Defense " When a creature hits you with an attack, you gain a +4 bonus to AC against all subsequent attacks made by that creature for the rest of the turn."(emphasis mine)
Scenario:
Ranger misses attack on Creature 1 Creature 1 successfully hits Ranger (MA Defense starts) Elf Wizard casts spell on Creature 2 Creature 2 falls to "sleep spell" Creature 3 misses Barbarian Barbarian misses Creature 3 End of round since all creatures took their turn. New round starts with new turns---
So does this interpret to mean the MA Defense ends since "turn"is over, or does the "turn" continue into Round 2, etc. allowing the MA Defense to continue until one of the parties is defeated and combat ends?
If it ended at Round 1, what benefit does it really give the Ranger since the initial hit by that creature was the only "turn" it had against him.
Maybe someone can clarify this for me,it just reads confusing right now?????? Thanks!

So:
Ranger misses attack on creature 1 and ends his turn. Creature 1 begins its turn. creature 1 attacks and successfully hits ranger (ma defense starts) creature 1 ends it's TURN. (ma defense ends)
The benefit, is when multiple attacks happen in a single turn. This will happen more and more as you level so it gains in value as you level. for example.
Creature 1 attacks Ranger and hits (ma defense starts) creature 1 attacks ranger again, ranger has +4 to AC because of MA defense. creature 1 attacks again, ranger still has bonus. creature 1 ends its turn. MA defense ends.
hope this helps. |
| (Reply to #2)Thorgeir | Yes, thank you. And I had already considered your scenario, I just was "mind-flawed" at reading it as is and assuming the creature only has one attack in his turn, so there really is no benefit until the ranger meets the creature you described with multi-attacks. Thanks again!

(The ability to take more than one attack during an action for a creature is called "Multiattack.")
Despite its name, Multiattack Defense does also protect against bonus action attacks in the case of Warhorses or Panthers, for example. |

| (Reply to #5)2Chlorobutanal | Huh? Warhorses or Panthers can do a bonus action attack in addition to their normal action attack. They would be successive attacks on the same turn and it seems clear to me that a Ranger would get +4 AC against the trampling hooves of a Warhorse or the Bite of a Panther. |
