Reloading

When attacking with a ranged weapon that uses ammunition, do you need to use the 'use an object' action to reload the weapon after you fire a second shot. I know you can interact with one object for free each turn. For example, I am playing a fifth level human fighter. I am wielding a hand crossbow. I have the crossbow expert feat. I use my attack action to fire with the crossbow. Can I use my extra attack to fire a second time and my action surge to fire a third time or do I need to reload for free after the first shot and then use the 'use an object' action to reload the weapon after second shot.

I ask the question because when I read things like the ranger's multiattack (volley) feature, it seems like a weak ability if you need to 'reload' every time after the first shot.

You can load your weapon as part of your attack, but if you wish to reload your weapon without immediately firing it, then you'd need to use your object interaction.

If you have Crossbow Expert, then you can fire a crossbow as much as you'd like via Extra Attack or Volley.

Action Surge allows the additional attack regardless of the feat, since the loading property only limits you to one shot per action/reaction/bonus action.  So for instance, the haste spell or the cleric's war priest feature each allow a second shot without a feat.

As long as it fires ammunition yes. Otherwise you will have to use the 'use object'  action to draw

I would allow thrown weapons to work. No reason not to.

I would probably let them buy/design/whatever a special sheathe/holster thing that would hold X of them in a 'quick draw' arrangement so they could draw-throw more than one per turn.... but would still keep it from being unlimited.
