The fighter's remarkable athlete ability says that "Starting at 7th level, you can add half your proficiency bonus (round up) to any Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution check you make that doesn’t already use your proficiency bonus." Does this mean that fighter get half prof. bonus on everything from stealth to picking locks?

That is how I read it, but I guess it could apply to attribute only checks.  So maybe pure strength checks but not strength(athletics).  Still yeah I read it as applying to picking locks etc.

Seems like it to me. They're that physically conditioned that they're half as good as those trained. It gives them some more options during exploration.

I think it's referring to ability checks only, not skill checks, but I could be wrong.

Skill checks are just ability checks that call out a skill to grant proficiency.

True. But when it comes to picking locks, it might be a moot point if the fighter in question hasn't got proficiency with thieves' tools.

My read is that you can use it for any check based on those ability scores, that you are not already proficient in (no stacking).  So, yes, you can apply it to stealth checks, because they are dexterity (stealth) checks.  Picking locks would require you to be proficient in thieves tools.  If the DM was okay with giving you a shot regardless, using a dex check, then it would apply.

I just noticed something interesting. On page 61, it says "At the beginning of every combat, you roll initiative by making a Dexterity check." (bolding mine) Would this mean that remarkable athlete applies to initiative?

Yes, that sounds correct.

However that's going to take a bit of adjustment. For example my Dwarf in the play test has 1/2 Plate with the Guardian feature. This gives me +2 to "Initiative". I wonder how that would work with this new wording...
