Retraining Feats

I have an idea for a build that involves taking Ritual Caster (Wizard) Than later Multiclassing into Wizard. Would I be able to switch Feats? Same goes for basic Armor Feats then Multiclassing.

Another question is how would you treat a player who was say a Fighter Polearm Master then went Sorcerer/Monk and now uses no weapon? Would you allow it? Do the rules allow for these situations?

There are no rules for retraining feats. As a DM I normally allow a fair bit of changes at lower levels or if you took a feat and it's just not working for you but it's on a case by case basis and nothing official.

As a DM, I'm happy for players to almost totally rewrite the mechanics of their character at any level. After all, it usually beats having them retire a character and create a new one in terms of campaign building. As long as the story is improved more by the character remaining the same than it is harmed by the changes, it's all good.

That said within the rules there's a couple of things you could do:

1. Take ritual caster for a different class than wizard. In the end you'll be a wizard with some extra rituals. Cleric is probably the top choice for end result, while bard is pretty good for aligning with wizard spells.

2. Take magic initiate instead

Retraining would currently be houserules, so you'd have to check with your DM.  As far as I'd rule though, it is strengthing the story of "training" into the other class (if I am understanding correctly), and would be very open to the idea at my table.  Rather than going from (potentially) zero magic to *boom* 1st level wizard would seem a strange thing "in the field", and the stepping stone of "I've cribbed a few rituals from the magic user that I've started to get the hang of" makes a more gradual introduction.  I'd maybe put a restriction on which feats could be retrained in that case (so Ritual Caster could be swapped out for War Caster or other magic focused feat, but not for Heavy Armour Master, say).

Saeviomagy gives some good suggestions for keeping completely in line with the rules and getting more benefit out of the results (although I might suggest taking wizards rituals and then a different spell using class, as I think wizard Ritual Caster is considered one of the strongest and can still have the "slowly growing into the power" aspect).

Officially they should keep the Feat, but this is how I would rule it as DM:

If the player picked a Feat and really doesn't enjoy it, sure.

If the player picked Heavy Armour Master because it's overpowered at low level and now wants to switch it because it's not as OP anymore: Nope.

Since I play with friends I can easily spot the reason.

I love the whole idea of gradually progressing to another class, rather then just taking on levels in the new class without any previous history. I'd be more than willling to help a player out with such an idea.

the only "retrain" rule that i know is for Adventure league, which state that before level 4, you can change everything on your character except your name, your magical item obtained and your story origin. Pass level 4 no change are allowed except if once of your choice is illegal because of the errata.

for non Adventure League game, ask you DM since no such rule exist outside AL.
