| #1transcendantviewerMar 30, 2015 11:08:21 | I had a question that popped into my head while thinking about taking the Ritual Caster Feat. If you're mounted, (Like with the Phantom Steed spell) can you carry out a ritual as well or is that not possible due to the jostling of the mount? Because if it is, I'd use that to routinely summon more mounts for myself and my party so we could rapidly travel great distances without having to slow down. And the other question was: Can Tenser's Floating Disk carry living creatures? |
| #2jaelisMar 30, 2015 11:31:36 | You have to maintain concentration while casting a ritual, since it takes 10 minutes. But in normal circumstances I don't think that would be hard to do while mounted, I wouldn't require any checks or anything. I might require a check if the mount took damage or some other significant distraction occurred.
My book isn't in front of me, but I think TFD can carry a creature, just not the caster.

SO for example if you ritual cast detect magic, you need to keep concentration on detect magic or you loose the spell. If you start a ritual to renew your detect magic, then you will cancel your first detect magic. So in the best case scenario, if you chain ritual cast detect magic, you will have it active 50% of the time (10 minute concentration on detect magic, then 10 minute concentrating on the ritual to cast detect magic)
IF phantom steed also require concentration (I might be wrong since I do not have my book) then you when you try to ritual cast phantom steed your current steed would disapear. |
| #4jaelisMar 30, 2015 12:07:15 | Phantom steed doesn't require concentration. |
| #5JamwesMar 30, 2015 12:13:12 | IIRC (I too don't have my book in front of me, but I looked it up this weekend) the only thing you need to do is spend an action casting the ritual spell every turn. If you're riding (or even walking) you're just spending your movement to keep moving. So, as long as anything that requires an action doesn't happen, you can keep using your action for casting your ritual while moving. |
| #6IllithidbixMar 30, 2015 13:11:11 | Providing the mount didn't get bored and CHARGE OFF FOR ADVENTURES! in the 10ish minutes it takes to cast, I'd not see a problem. Hell some rituals should pretty much require you to be riding a Dragon to cast.
Checking my PHB, nope Phantom Steed doesn't require concentration, Duration: 1 hour. Casting time: 1 minute; so 11 minutes as a ritual. Which gives you 49 minutes of GHOST PONY TIME! |
| #7transcendantviewerMar 30, 2015 13:53:27 | Well, these are things to consider, but I'm not closer to solving this query. Anyway, thanks to everybody who responded thus far. |
| #8Thoughts_My_AimMar 30, 2015 13:56:46 | I'm a bit confused. Does a phantom steed vanish if you dismount? Otherwise why would you have to be mounted to perform the ritual? |

| #10transcendantviewerMar 30, 2015 14:31:33 | Where is it listed that a Ritual has the 10 minutes added to the regular casting time of the spell instead of simply becoming the casting time of the spell? I've never been able to find that. |

| #13transcendantviewerMar 30, 2015 15:12:16 | I understand why they did that, but doesn't that just make the casting times into silly numbers? |

| #15EmpactWBMar 30, 2015 16:38:08 | It doesn't even need to be regular riding speed. Half speed on a horse is still faster than stopped (or a dwarf at regular speed). |

| #17transcendantviewerMar 30, 2015 18:16:07 | Ritual Casting has so little about it written, I'm surprised questions like this haven't come up before. |
| #18jaelisMar 30, 2015 18:20:06 | Its just like casting a long spell, what is there to say? You need to use your action on it each turn, and you need to concentrate. Those are pretty well described. |
| #19Byakugan01Mar 31, 2015 0:45:55 | You could theoretically have 4 phantom steeds concurrently summoned. That takes 44 minutes of your hour, with a 5th casting that would replace your first horse...leaving 5 minutes to account for swapping horses etc.
any actual random encounter is likely to derail 1 casting.
The horse does not disappear if dismounted. The spell does end when it takes damage. But the caveat is it wont actually disappear for 1 minute after that happens. Which is kinda cool cuz you could either flee very fast or finish a fight with your 100 combat speed.
It doesn't really say what happens if the steed dies, but it is fair to assume it acts like a dead horse would until the minute is up. |

| #21Thoughts_My_AimMar 31, 2015 6:55:57 | They could have gone with "ten times normal casting length" which would put one-minute spells at ten minutes, one-action spells at one minute, and hour-long spells at several hours.
This would avoid the "silly" numbers, and would also make casting-as-ritual a non-trivial alternative for spells with already long cast times. |

| #23Coredump00Mar 31, 2015 13:26:46 | Makes sense to me... it takes about 10 minutes to get all the ritual gear in place and prepare the locationd and your mind for casting a ritual spell.... then you just need to actually cast the spell. |

| #25transcendantviewerMar 31, 2015 16:13:30 | Yeah, that does put things in perspective, AaronOfBarbaria, though for spells with a casting time of an action, personally, as a DM, I'd just say "The casting time for the Ritual version of that spell is 10 minutes." rather than "The casting time for the Ritual version of that spell is 10 minutes and one action." but the other ones, with a longer casting time, I'd enforce normally. |

| #28jaelisMar 31, 2015 20:59:10 | Well, the classics "summoning rituals" would probably be Planar Binding and Planar Ally, which are both already long casting times. So they act like rituals, you just need to burn your spell slot for them. Which makes sense, they are potent magics. |
| #29transcendantviewerApr 01, 2015 6:58:33 | True, but specifically, this forum was started regarding spells with the ritual tag. Other spells aren't available to my character because he's a fighter that isn't going to become an Eldritch Knight. |
