You can only get sneak attack with finesse or ranged weapons (this includes thrown weapons). 1b. Advantage when attacking comes from a variety of sources. Class features, the hide action (more specifically, when a creature can't see you), the help action (perhaps from a familiar, if you're that kind of rogue), when a creature within 5' is prone, creature is restrained, creature is unonscious, creature is paralyzed, creature is blinded. There's a thread in the Player Help forum listing a ton of ways for Rogues to gain advantage. Check it out. 2. There is no penalty for firing into melee. |
| #3tallric_kruushAug 25, 2014 14:30:36 | I've seen a bit of debate on the forums surrounding question #2, with some extreme stances taken in those threads.
The rules seem to indicate that creatures do gain concealment/cover from other creatures. (This is the basis for the Halfling's Naturally Stealthy racial feature.)
Concealment/Cover provides +2 to Armor Class. That being the case, you could say there is potentially a penalty to firing into melee. It would depend on whether your foe has cover from your attack.
I assumed that was the mathematical reason behind the +2 Attack Bonus for the Archery Fighting Style.
I'm not alone in adjudicating this in this fashion, am I? |
