One of my players asked me if he could use the benefit of sneak attack with spells and my initial thought was no, and after giving it some thought and research I came to the conclusion that no it wasn't possible as the rules are written. Pg 96 P.H.B

It's says "Finesse or a ranged weapon" not Ranged spell attack. What is the communities thoughts on this?

Its not that surprising, a multiclass rouge with a fireball, imagine adding an extra 3d6 to that. youve almost doubled that spells damage now. Or to Magic Missile, auto hit 1d4*x+2d6? the numbers just go up a lot when you spell sneak attack

Can't allow it. Cantrips scale by level already keeping up with multiple attacks (how well depending on the cantrip), if you can sneak attack on top of that it'd be broken at higher levels.

Rogue 18/Warlock 2 you'd get 4d10+20 +9d6. Which is a bit silly.

It's no allowed or intended.  Also note that sneak attack is 1/turn.

That said, if you want, you could make a "arcane dart" cantrip that deals 1d4+Int damage, does not scale, and can be used to sneak attack.

Outside of houserules and homebrew spells, there's no Sneak attack on spells as per pg. 96 "The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon."

Honestly I'm surpised the spell sniper feat doesn't add that ability.
