Rope Trick question

As a card-carrying member of the Rope Trick Afficienados Anonymous Fan Club, I use Rope Trick frequently and I have several lengths of rope to use depending on the situation.  But ... do I have to have all this rope?

If I have a 50' length of rope, can I make the rope trick only use 30' of that?  Or will it always use the full length of the rope used?

DM call, but I'd say it uses the whole length, as it's "a length" (that is, one piece of rope).

My question is, why would you need that much rope? Rope Trick's a great spell, but I don't see it being so situational that it needs more than one (or at most two) lengths of rope to use.

At low level you might use Rope trick to climb up a cliff face and need 50'?

Does anyone ever use like 2' of rope and make a rope trick that opens low to the ground?

Although spells and attacks can't cross the rope trick barrier, is the opening visible from outside the interdimensional space?

Pretty much why I have various length of rope is so that I can use it depending on the size of the cliff I need to climb.  But if I could replace them all with just one 50' length that can just be used at whatever length, that would be preferable.

"You touch a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long.  One end of the rope then rises into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground."

Sorry, but you need multiple lengths of rope.  There are of course fluff ways around this (cut the rope before using, knot if you need longer, etc)
