I see that crafting magic items has been left out of the PHB. When can we exepect to see something official on these popular game elements?

They're very likely to be in the DMG with the rest of the magic item rules.

They were in every other edition... except 4E, which put magic items and the rituals in the PHB.

 

I suspect they might move away a bit from "throw X amount of gold at it" but I maybe wrong.

Yeah, I think the DMG is definitely a better place for this. It allows DMs to better regulate magic items in their campaigns.

 

I certainly hope there are very specific guidelines for game balance in high magic settings, and guidelines for magic item economies like the one in Eberron. To not include solid guidelines would be a pretty bad oversight, in my mind.
