Does this HD come out of their normal pool of refreshes (i.e., the reroll that everyone can do during their short rest? I would think not, since it would be lame.
2. FIghter's Champion archetype. This seems super underpowered compared with the other two options for fighter. What am I missing? |

Second Wind restores HPs and has nothing to do with Hit Die, much the same way that Healing Word or Cure Wounds restores HPs and has nothing to do with Hit Die. So, no, Second Wind does not use any Hit Die.
Champions may be a bit bland, but they have some potent abilities. I wouldn't say they were underpowered compared to the other two martial archetypes. The Battlemaster gets some strong tactical choices but can't use them constantly, and whilst the Eldritch Knight does get access to spells, they are somewhat situational in their usefulness since the Eldritch Knight gets access to spells slowly, often meaning they're melee attack option is often a stronger choice. |

If you have a lot of buffs (advantage, haste, crusader's mantle, ect...) then it can be slightly more powerful. Since crit range applies to every attack and bonus die, where battlemaster can't be multipled as easily.
Eldirch knight is more about utility, and is weaker then champion in combat. Though having an owl familar scout out a possibly deadly trap, or dropping a fog cloud has it's uses. |

Good to know that - I suspected it was the case (couldn't see any of the exception text to say that "20 is autohit, but not other numbers"; such text was present in 3.X), but wasn't sure. I need to be more careful when I handle Champion calculations going forward - Improved Critical doesn't just increase the chance of a critical hit, it reduces the chance of a miss against extreme ACs. You know, like the big bad evil dragons that mythic champions often fight. |
