If an item is used unattuned, does it still suffer from potential alignment conflicts?

I don't think you can use an item that requires attunement without doing that step.  Correct me if I'm wrong anyone?

For example, there is a sword in one of the adventures that gives an extra D6 damage without attunement, but that increases to 2d6 once attuned.
