Sentinel Feat and Reach weapons

I'm trying to figure out if the Sentinel Feat overrides the Opportunity Attack rules regarding Reach. It appears by RAW that Sentinel gives Reach weapons an Opportunity Attack within Reach between 6' and reach distance since it explicitly states 5 feet. Is it possible RAI should have replaced the '5 feet' text with 'within reach'? 

 

Opportunity Attack rule: You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach.

 

Sentinel rule: Creatures within 5 feet of you provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach.

 

So in an example: would a Pike wielding charactcer with Sentinel now get opportunity attacks on a creature move from 3' away to 8' away?

OK, one point at a time: how does the second dot point not contradict the very clear description of Disengage? "Your movement doesn't provoke OAs for the rest of the turn" p. 192

 

If I have a movement of 30 ft. and choose to Disengage I can move that whole 30 ft. and not provoke an OA, even if I leave 3 or 4 reaches in doing so. Even if I duck and weave through a line of reaches.

Yes, Sentinel specifically says it overrides Disengage.

The RAW is defintiely poorly worded. My group seems to agree with Vicerious RAI interpretation.

 

As much as I hate house rules, I personally prefer simplifying it to 'Creatures within your reach provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach'.

I never heard the final verdict if you have a 10 feet reach all the time or only when you take the attack action. I don't have my books in front of me. If the intent was to let someone with a reach weapon attack to 10 feet on their turn but only have opportunity attacks within 5 feet then sentinal seems ok. Was their ever a tweet or consensus on the opportunity attack range ? I know it was talked about awhile back.
