Shadow *poof*

So a dragon and monk walk into a bar...

Lets say the monk wants to avoid getting a face full of breath weapon. Can the monk ready a Shadow Step when he sees the dragon winding up to use it breath weapon? Dragon takes aim at monk and... *POOF*....teleports to another location before taking damage.

i.e. ready shadow step with trigger being dragon breath weapon aim at monk. My understanding is that the readied action becomes a REACTION and reactions are capable of interupting the trigger similar to the way a shield spell trigger on a hit but before damage is dealt.

Yep, that works. The trigger is not 'after the dragon breathes on me', because even the ready action cannot change the past. The trigger has to be something like, 'As the dragon starts to exhale...' to teleport in time.

It's my understanding that you can't Ready a bonus action such as Shadow Step - bonus actions can only be taken on your turn. You could ready a move, though, to try to get out of range of the line of fire.

Are specific things described AS bonus actions only? I thought the wording was you could do X as a bonus action.  You can always chose to do X as your normal action too.

I think it seems a little OP...but Ready Action is pretty vague. I guess I'd allow it, but make sure you ask your DM. Another question about Shadow Step though, does it incur an Opportunity Attack? Can I run up, Attack an enemy, then SS away without an AoO?

you cannot ready action a bonus action, and since dahsing 30 ft, provoking attack of Opportunity and being suceptible to trap is not the same thing as teleporting 60ft away avoiding attack of opportunity and avoiding trap, I would not allowed it.

In the bar circumstance, he the monk is 10ft away from teh dragonborn (so no AoO anyway) and no trap in the bar (what bar put trap to kill there drunken patron?) then I would allow it in the bar just for fun, but in most circumstance I wouldn,t allow it since it's not a simple reskin of the current mechanic.

One abuse of converting a bonus action to an action might be taking 2 bonus actions per turn. By extension of the rules for bonus actions on PHB p.189, you can take only one bonus action on your turn.

As far as Ready action is concerned, its rules restrict readying a spell to those that have a casting time of 1 action. Thus, allowing a conversion of a spell's casting time from bonus action to action circumvents the Ready action restriction.

I'd say that if you took a bonus action on your own turn then you couldn't take another bonus action via the Ready action.

Well, per the book Ready can only be used for an action or movement. So there's no question that the rules preclude readying a bonus action.

If you are house ruling, then you can do what you want. I am still curious whether there would be any practical problems with a house rule that you could use an action to perform a bonus action (assuming that bonus action was otherwise available), including using a bonus action wtih ready or taking two bonus actions in a turn.

  1. A Bard could hand out two instances of Bardic Inspiration in a turn...
  2. A Bard could hand out bardic Inspiration, then Ready a Bonus Action to hand out Bardic Inspiration triggered when the target of the first instance uses it, thereby allowing an ally with extra ttacks to use Bardic Inspiration on two attacks in one turn.
  3. A character could cast Healing Word, then Ready a Bonus Action to cast Healing Word at some point later in the round thereby bypassing the Bonus Action Spell limitation.
  4. (Already mentioned) Sorcerer's can convert Spell Slots to Sorcery Points twice in one turn.

Those are just a few that come to mind - the first three I can see being problematic.

What about the first two seems problematic? Honest question, I haven't played yet with a bard. (Obviously bardic inspiration is nice, but worth giving up the bard's own action for?)

Healing word wouldn't work, same reason you can't cast HW and then ready Cure Wounds: you actually cast the spell on your turn when you ready a spell, and you can't cast a non-cantrip spell with a bonus spell.
