I swear I remember reading in either the errata or sage advice that the bonus action shove from shield master could be used before making an attack, but I can't find where it's written. Does someone have a link to this ruling, or am I misremembering this?

So to extend this topic a bit, but is the advantages of being able to push someone 5' each round, other than tactically?  What abilities would this synergize with?

If I'm a fighter, why do I want to push my opponents away, wouldn't I want to keep them close?  Does pushing them potentially trigger AoOs or other actions from other people?  Or is pushing really large situational for controlling enemy positioning?

Thanks.

You can choose to push your target away or knock them prone. By knocking them prone, you have advantage on attacks against the target.

Also, you could potentially knock someone off of a cliff, which is always fun

If you knocked someone away you might slow an ally to move without triggering an opportunity attack.

If you push someone 5' away, you can then reposition without provoking.

Why push a target?

To push them into somewhere bad for them. E.g. a grease spell, a web, a cliff, a pit.

To push them away from someone (maybe you!) so they don't get attacks of opportunty.

To get them out of cover, e.g. from an archer behind you.

To get them into cover.

Also you can push a party member. Creature that are pushed don't take op attacks, and you can choose to fail an ability check. Enemy closes in on mage, you shove mage out of combat and take his place, allowing him to retreat.
