| #1alienuxJul 18, 2014 10:07:50 | I feel like at one point in the playtest, there was a limit to the number of short rests a party could take during a single adventuring day (like a maximum of 1 or 2 per day).
I can't find anything like that in the final rules, or in the last playtest packet.
Was there actually a rule like that at one time in the playtest, or am I remembering incorrectly? |
| #2iserithJul 18, 2014 10:18:42 | I don't recall one. There was a limit of gaining the benefits of a long rest to once per 24-hour period, however. |
| #3alienuxJul 18, 2014 10:27:04 | Ok, it must be just my imagination, or I was remembering the limit for long rests and thinking that there was a similar rule for short rests.
Thanks. |
| #4SaelornJul 18, 2014 10:29:05 | There are some class features which have a limited ability to benefit from short rests, though. From what I recall, a wizard's Arcane Recovery is only once-per-day-during-a-short-rest. |
| #5ProphetSwordJul 18, 2014 10:34:35 | You are limited to a maximum of 24 short rests in a day. |

| #8iserithJul 18, 2014 11:01:25 | I'm just pissed I didn't come up with that joke first. Well played. |
| #9ProphetSwordJul 18, 2014 11:04:45 | Sorry it's not as helpful as it could be, but according to the rules it's about the most accurate rule you can come up with. Also, I couldn't resist the temptation to make that joke.
That being said, if you're running the table, you should put whatever limit seems appropriate to your game (whether that's 2 or 4 or 6, or whatever). 5th Edition is all about making rulings. |
| #10myrpgJul 18, 2014 12:42:47 | Well, based on Starter Set you can have maximum of 16 short rests, as there needs to be one long for at least 8 hours.
Seriously, the max number of effective short rests depends on the Hit Dice of the PCs, and how they use their allowed short rest hit dice for recovery per short rest, and wether they had used hit dice in short rests on the previous day. |
| #11ProphetSwordJul 18, 2014 12:55:34 | I don't think that a long rest is required within a 24 hour period. |
| #12myrpgJul 18, 2014 13:22:24 | It is not required, but it is the only way to refress those spent Hit Dice in short rests. And you can have only one long rest in 24 hours. So in effiency in mind... |
| #13ProphetSwordJul 18, 2014 14:07:58 | Right. I'm just saying that the way you worded this...
Well, based on Starter Set you can have maximum of 16 short rests, as there needs to be one long for at least 8 hours.
...makes it seem like the Starter Set requires you to have a long rest of at least 8 hours in a given day. But, you do not need to have a long rest (or a short rest, for that matter) on any given day.

A short rest is at least one hour and doesn't stop at one hour. If the group continues to short rest after one hour that makes it part of the current short rest and not another short rest. The group needs to break that rest up with activities somehow in order to start another. I have to conclude that means 15 short rests as maximum unless the group gives up the long rest and assuming the opportunity for the short rests exists. |
