Should attack spells be able to do critical hits?

I don't ever recall an edition of D&D where spells did critical hits.  Maybe it is for good reason, as it gives classes that use weapons something over a spell caster who gets many dice to roll already.

But, in your opinions, should attack spells be able to do critical hits on a roll of 20?  Or are they fine the way they are?

3e did this. I believe 4e did as well. And I don't recall seeing any reason why spells wouldn't do this in 5e either (but I could be wrong).

From the 3.5e SRD:

Spells and Critical Hits

A spell that requires an attack roll can score a critical hit. A spell attack that requires no attack roll cannot score a critical hit.

The rules for crits are general:

Rolling 1 or 20:
Sometimes fate blesses or curses a combatant, causing the novice to hit and the veteran to miss.
If the d20 roll for an attack is a 20, the attack hits regardless of any modifiers or the target’s AC. In addition, the attack is a critical hit, as explained later in this chapter.
If the d20 roll for an attack is a 1, the attack misses regardless of any modifiers or the target’s AC.

4e "spells" are the essentially same thing as non-spell attacks, and all of it crits.

Fear the Divination wizard. Avada Kedavra indeed. Nothing like 38d6+40 on a Disintegrate you know will hit. (You don't know it won't bounce back though!)

and spell with multiple spell attack (like Scorching ray) each ray crit, hit or miss individually. So a scorhcing ray level 2 (3 rays) you can have 1 ray that hit (2d6) on ray that crit (4d6) and one ray that miss (0)

Magic missile cannot crit since there is no attack roll

Fireball cannot crit since there is no attack roll.

Crittin' and killin' an Ancient Dragon with a crit-ted Cantrip should be lot of fun.
