Thoughts and what is your reasoning for them? |
| #2TimboramaSep 17, 2014 12:33:34 | The spell specifically says it is centered on a point. Meaning, a point in space. Some spells have alternate methods of casting (like Darkness) that can also target objects or creatures, but those are specific and spelled out, and Silence is not one of them.
Be sure to let the player know if you plan to correct this BEFORE he tries it again! Quick DM rulings happen a lot, just let the PC know so they don't prepare SIlence that day thinking they can do the same exact thing |
| #3iserithSep 17, 2014 12:34:08 | A point of origin is typically a point in space unless it specifies the point of origin as a creature or object. So in the case of a silence spell which doesn't specify it as a creature or object as the point of origin, it'd be a point in space and thus stationary. |

| #6onceMoreIntoBreechSep 17, 2014 14:39:12 | And I said IF I was going to argue the matter, I would make the case that anything could count as a point. "I choose the point equadistent between BBEG's nostrils and one inch in front of his face" instead of "I choose a point over there, five feet above the ground." The point in front of BBEG's nose moves relative to BBEG whereas the point above the ground moves relative to the ground (unless this mystical setting is on the backs of elephants floating through space, in which case I'm not playing the game anyway, instead of a planetary body).
Again, IF I was going to make the argument, that's what I would use. |
