I thought I had this figured out until I saw someone elses online char sheet.

Hypothetical Situation:

I am Character X with a Wisdom of 17.  This gives me a modifier of +3.

I am proficient in Animal Handling.  This gives me a bonus of +2

I now have a total of +5

Next:

Same char, same Wisdom, same modifier of +3

I am NOT proficient in Medicine, no bonus.

Total of +3

Question:

Can I apply my Wisdom (or any) modifier to a (any) non-proficent skill roll?

The person I saw was adding all mods to all skills, proficient or not.

This somehow seems a little too much.

Thanks!

A skill check is just an ability check plus proficiency bonus (plus maybe Expertise, if that's something you got).

If the DM asks for a Wisdom (Insight) check because you're trying to determine if the Duke is lying to you, you'd just roll a Wisdom check if you don't have Insight trained.

Yes, you can definitely add your appropriate ability modifier to a any skill check.  The skill proficiency is additional to the bonus if proficient in that score.  Ability checks are the base mechanic.  Something not mentioned yet, however, is that it's possible to substitue one type of ability for another based on how you are accomplishing the skill check at the DM's discretion.  Using STR in an intimidating display, for example.
