from my understanding, when a spell get at a higher level, that spell should be more powerfull then a spell of lower level?

So why does the new vitriolic sphere (spell level 4) deal MARGINALLY more damage then Fireball (spell level 3)

fireball level 3 deal 8d6+1d6/level fire damage in a 20ft radius. for an average damage of 28

Vitrioloic sphere deal 10d4+2d4/level then an additional 5d4 acid damage at the end of next turn in the same 20ft radius. for an initial of 25 damage which is LOWER then Fireball average damage of 37 damage. Yes if the ennemies fails there save Vitriolic do a big 9 damage more then Firball but allow the monster to survive an extra round, is that worth a spell level?

If we increase fireball to a level 4 spell, now dealing 9d6 damage, the average become 31.5, yes vitriolic is still stronger but again allow the creature to survive an extra round before dealing more damage then Fireball do.

ok so vitriolic sphere do more damage then fireball (9 extra damage) and scale better but allowed an extra round to the monster.

Now let's compare if the target fails their saving throws. (both Dex save)

Fireball average will fall to 14 damage (15 damage if level up to a 4th level spell)

Vitriolic Sphere now only do 12 damage.

So Fireball level 3 will do more INITIAL damage then vitriolic Sphere level 4, but vitriolic sphere will do more damage at the END of the next turn. and if the fail save Fireball do more damage period. Vitriolic Sphere scale slightly better then fireball,

Is that worht a spell being a spell level higher? I see vitriolic Sphere as being comaprable to fireball, they both have point stronger and weaker then the other spell, both spell should be level 3 spell. Once again fire spell are a lot stronger then there alternative elemental choice, making the fire sorcerer the only logical choice, as much that I would love to play an acid dragon sorcerer, the spell list is simply not there.

At least when you compare Fireball to ice storm, Ice storm make the terrain difficult which is great, reducing most ennemy speed by half allow your range DPR to kill them before they reach the group,

Vitrolic does 17.5% more damage.

I think that's failry reasonable for only 1 spell level apart.

Casting them at level 5 and you'd see a much bigger difference.

Plus, Crawford has stated that they know Fireball/Lightning bolt are heavy damage dealers, and that is intentional.

So the famous spell that deals terrefic damage also deals that damage in the most commonly resisted element as well

there's very few things that resist anything at all. having the most isn't saying much.
