#1 steve-s332 Mar 16, 2015 15:50:29	One of the players in my group has asked to take the Spell Sniper feat, which I am OK with. One of the benefits of this feat is that you get to "learn one cantrip that requires an attack roll". My 2 questions are:   1) My assumption is that the extra cantrip you learn from this feat must come from your spell list. Is this correct? 2) When we say "attack roll" do we mean meleee attack, ranged attack, or both? My assumption is ranged attack only as this fits with the title of the feat.   Any thoughts?
#2 steve-s332 Mar 16, 2015 15:56:18	Whoops, might have just answered the first part of my own question - looks like you can choose from Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorceror, Warlock or Wizard. A straight reading seems to allow you to choose from any list regardless of your class.   Glad to hear views on the second part (and the first part as well).
#3 Macv12 Mar 16, 2015 18:48:31	They'd kind of be shooting themselves in the foot by not taking a ranged cantrip, but it's certainly allowed by the wording. Makes more sense if they already had a ranged cantrip that they want to apply Spell Sniper to, and they're just picking up a melee cantrip for versatility.   It may seem counterintuitive, but the end result is they have a ranged spell and a melee one. They could always have gone the other way around - started with a melee cantrip and used the feat to learn a ranged one - so the end result is consistent. Similar to the principle that when you gain proficiency in a skill from a class feature but you already had that skill, you get to choose anything. (I don't remember if this ever comes up in 5e though.) It actually makes good sense to have at least one non-ranged cantrip on hand anyway, for when things get too close for comfort.

#5 durntaur Mar 18, 2015 16:24:47	Yes, as long as the cantrip uses an attack roll, whether ranged or by touch, instead of requiring a save roll on the target's part it can be selected with this feat.   Also, for the sake of completeness, the spellcasting ability used for the selected cantrip is that of original class, not your own; sometimes they're the same, sometimes not.
