Spellcasting focus

Hi,

I am wondering what the actual value of a spellcasting focus is.

For paladins clerics, I see that it offers some advantage for spells that need somatic and material components.  At least you can stay fully armed if the focus is on your shield.

But for arcane casters, I am having trouble seeing the actual value.  Isn't a component pouch just as useful as an arcane focus?

And a last, related question: can eldritch knights, rangers, or arcane tricksters use an spellcasting focus?  I don't see anywhere in the rules where it expilicitly says they can...  so at this point I assume they could only use a component pouch.

Thanks for any help and clarifications.

Cheers,

Neil
