Staff of the Adder

One of my players got ahold of a "Staff of the Adder," (to spice up the game I've been randomly rolling chances for magical items) an uncommon attunement staff that can as a bonus action transform into a snake head and be used to melee attack, the benefit being a decent poison damage addition. For a caster, making a melee attack seems to make this item pretty undersireable.

My player and I have discussed perhaps having the staff serve as a defensive item, that it would attack on its own as a "bonus" action, albeit with only the character's proficency bonus, on an enemy within reach, or as a "reaction" if the character is attacked.

Any views on abuse if we modify it?

Seems fine.  Just make it use a reaction so you can't run into a group of monsters and attack them all.

"If you are attacked with a melee attack while wielding this staff, you can use a reaction to have the staff strike back at the attacker.  Make a melee attack against the attacker, if it his, you deal 2d8 poision damage."
