Stealth Movement

Dungeons and Dragons 5e

Does anyone know what the movement speed of a character stealthing is?

AND where this is supported in the rulebooks.

Some people feel that is 2/3rds speed (Most races have a base movement of 30'/round) So movement in stealth would be 20'/round.

Other people playing in our area think it is is normal pace (30'/round).

Thoughts?

Player's Handbook page 182 has a chart listing movement per minute. Regular speed is 300 ft, slow is 200 ft. The same page under Stealth starts "While traveling at a slow pace...", so 2/3rds appears to be correct per RAW.

Yeah, inside combat, there is no rule saying that you move slower when hidden. If you directly approach the enemy, your stealth ends anyway. This really ends up with reasoning enough why your movement is not detected and strongly depends on what the DM decides in each situation.

When traveling and the party wants to use stealth, they need to move at slow pace as the others already explained.

Alright, thanks.  2/3rd when travelling and normal during combat is what I will convey to the other DMs.

Thanks people!

Have to say I agree that by the book, moving stealithy in combat doesn't slow you down.

If the floor is slick.  If you can only step on certain stones. If you are trying to be stealthy. If you need to need to avoid things hanging from the ceiling. If you are juggling while walking. Etc....   All of these make the situation 'not normal', which means the DM needs to adjudicate.

Moving stealthily in combat is just part of the role-play, that's why it can't be summarized in a rule. Nobody can walk behind an obstacle 30ft away from an enemy, hide there and then on his next turn walk 30ft in a straight line towards the enemy and attack it hidden. The moment you walk out from behind the obstacle you end being hidden.

RAW does not impose a penalty against movement speed while hidden. I think you guys are getting confused because you're trying to make a ruling on something that doesn't exist in 5e rules. There are no rules for "stealth movement". You make a stealth check, and if you pass you remain hidden from the enemy until you enter it's line of sight or you attack it. The closest thing to "stealth movement" is the rogue's "supreme sneak" which grants advantage if you move less than half of your movement. Besides that, realistically it isn't difficult to move quietly at a rate of 5ft per second. Hopefully this clears things up

So... There's fog... You'll have to move no more than 20 ft. per round if you want to remain hidden in it. But once you're in combat you can run around like mad and still remain hidden?

There's a hallway with a trap at the end of it... If you're rushing down it, 40 ft. per round, the trap will be harder to spot. But if you're in combat running from an enemy down it, you can spot the trap like normal?

I just don't see how Combat and Travel Pace are mutually exclusive solely because, "the book doesn't say they're not."
