I understand studded leather armor has metal components. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If yes, can a rust monster damage the armor?

Studded leather armor is leather with some kind of studs in it. I think the studs are generally assumed to be metal, but they could be any material - that's why studded leather has been acceptable armor on the past for characters who can't wear metal. So if the studs are metal, yes, a rust monster logically would wreck the armor, but in 20+ years of playing I have never myself rules, nor been in a game under a DM who ruled that way.

Wood shields definitely exist, druids can start with them.

I would also think that the rust monster would only be able to destroy a few of the metal studs per attack.  The rust monster would have to have complete access over an extended period of time to completely ruin it IMO

When I google studded leather, the appropriate ( not modern style leathers ) pictures that I see show some armors that would be ruined by the metal being removed, and some that would be worse for wear but not ruined if the metal was gone. So based off that alone, I am still not swayed to the " armor destroyed " camp. In conjunction with the description provided in the PHB ( Made from tough but flexible leather, studded leather is reinforced with close-set rivets or spikes ) , I read it as the reinforcement is destroyed by the rust monster, leaving a passable ( but not nice looking ) suit of leather armor. I suppose I could be seen as being too generous to players.

Nothing requires studded leather to have metal plates. For all we know it's multiple sheets of (possibly hardened) leather rivetted together.

Guess that ultimately I will rule a rust monster will not be able to damage an studded leather in my game. I have a group of 3 players all wearing studded leather, kind of unfortunate that I cannot make use of such interesting monster.
