Here is our scenario: We are a group of three, a Paladin, Scorcerer, and me the Barbarian. We are on a ship and get attacked by a flying creature. We all roll perception and we are all surprised and do not see this creature about to attack us. However, I am a barbarian and have feral instinct. What advatage will this grant me? Here is how we played it...
Perception Check....All failed
Rolled initiative...Creature 19....Me(barbarian)18........paladin 10.....Scorcerer 9
Round 1...Creature: attacks me and hits me, Me: Since I can act normally, I rage and attack the creature Paladin and Scorcerer are surpised and cannot act.
Is this correct and if so, what would happen if my initiative was before the attacking creature? Woud I be able to ready a triggering action, but how could I if I do not perceive any threat? But doesn't feral intsinct mean that I have some sixth sense about a certain situation.

You didn't consciously notice the threat, but your lizard brain noticed for you, punched the "fight or flight" button to turn on rage, and you just start swinging before you know it. This situation is slightly odd because the enemy wouldn't be in range to be axe'd if you rolled better init, but you could ready and play yourself as standing perfectly still, facing the opposite direction, then whipping around and decking the bird in the nose when it flies toward you.
Or any number of other things.
Point being that surprise makes you do nothing on your first turn, Feral Instinct ignores it so you can act normally. |

"(...) if you are surprised at the beginning of combat [as opposed to...?] and aren't incapacitated, you can act normally on your first turn, but only if you enter your rage before doing anything else on that turn."
Flavor text also mentions instincts.
It's pretty much no-questions-asked.
One thing to note is that you're still Surprised, you're just allowed to act, so be careful around any card-carrying Assassin rogues. Also it doesn't actually let you perceive a creature that's beaten you with a stealth roll, but I would ignore that and say you noticed and reacted to it a split second after it revealed itself and before it attacked you, because the alternative isn't as interesting. |

You're still labelled as surprised, you just have another feature stating that although you're surprised you can still act as long as you activate your rage as your first act during your turn. Assassins still get auto crits if they hit you for example. +1 |
