I have a couple question about the Telekinesis spell, when applied to worn/carried objects.
The PHB says:
If the object is worn or carried by a creature, you must make an ability check with your spellcasting ability contested by that creature’s Strength check. If you succeed, you pull the object away from that creature and can move it up to 30 feet in any direction but not beyond the range of this spell.
I understand it's here for things like armors or held weapons, but the wording is a bit odd. For example: 1. How does that work with an object like a gold pouch for example? Say you want just to untie it, and not pull it away from its owner, what would happen? (a strength check seems out of place here)
2. If a your team mate is holding a rope, and you want to lift the rope by telekinesis, does the rule above applies?
The reason for these questions, is that my character has an access to a ring of Telekinesis, and I was wondering what could and could not be done with it. Things I'm wondering for example: - Can it be used on a shield that he's standing on, in order to fly? - Can it be used to lift a rope that another him or another character is holding? - Can it be used to steal gold from somebody's pouch? - can it be used on a worn/carried object, if it's without the purpose of pulling the object away from his owner, and if his owner is willing? (for example, say an ally is falling of a cliff- can you use it on his armor to prevent him from dying from the fall?) etc
Ring of Telekinesis: While wearing this ring, you can cast the telekinesis spell at will, but you can target only objects that aren't being worn or carried.
Thanks in advance!

I think it would be reasonable to require a pick pocket check for someone using telekinesis as well. Otherwise the person holding the object/coin purse is going to notice. |
