Temporary Hit Points And Duration

So, as far as I understand, tHP works just like in all other systems except for one area which I think might be intentional or might be my misunderstanding.

It says, "Unless a feature that grants you temporary hit points has a duration, they last until they're depleted or you finish a long rest."

Now, both 1st Lvl spells Armor of Agathys or False Life say:

"You gain 5 temporary hit points for the duration," and "you gain 1d4 + 4 temporary hit points for the duration," respectively.

The duration for both is one hour.

Now, I feel a legitimate interpretation of these two mechanics is that the temporary HP would be a continuous effect, essentially creating a form of damage reduction.

So now the question is, am I reaching here?  If not, would it be game breaking if that were a legal ruling of the tHP rules?

In related news I find THP that regain X per round make a good approximation for a (sci-fi-esque) shield.

If it acts as continual damage reduction it will absolutely break the game.  A typical early game creature players might face is a kobold, which does 1d4 + 2 damage.  If a player has a 1d4+4 shield, they are essentially immune to kobolds.  A kobold can hit for 3, 4, 5, or 6.  A player's minimum shield is 5.  Meaning when the kobold rolls a maximum hit and the player rolls a minimum shield the player takes 1 damage.  On nearly all other outcomes the player takes 0 damage (the kobold can crit, but even that doesn't gaurantee it will get damage past the shield).

Upon further consideration and all the comments here, I believe I found the error in my thinking.  I was considering that last rule pertaining to duration as intended to extend tHP beyond the normal (lost upon taking damage), thus creating the continuous "shield" I had originally interpretted it as.  I didn't even consider that it was there to JUST to limit it from existing past the intended duration (considering that part of it to be so obvious that it didn't require further consideration).

That being said, I'm now rather disappointed by Armor of Agathys, feeling the THP and returned cold damage to be rather lackluster in comparison to the other 1st level warlock spells.  I can see it being more useful at higher levels, though, and would consider putting it in a higher spell slot.

Anyone care to convince me Armor of Agathys is still worthwhile as a 1st level spell?

Temporary HPs last until one of the following two conditions are met:

  • They are depleted via damage.
  • The duration expires.
  • You take a long rest.

THPs do not stack. If you get two sources of THPs, use the higher source and/or the source with the longest duration. THPs are expended first, with the character only losing actual HPs once all THPs are used.

I suggested elsewhere that the Inspiring Leader speech be given at the edge of town, not on the enemy's doorstep, because the THPs last until used; only going away upon taking a Rest.

Unless you are very fortunate, you can expect the THPs to be "used" during the fight - when you suffer your first serious hit.
