| #1blueheraldAug 15, 2015 13:13:37 | In the flavor text of the Thief Roguish Archetype on page 97 of the Player's Handbook, the last sentence includes:
"...you learn skills useful for delving into ancient ruins, reading unfamiliar languages, and using magic items you normally couldn't employ."
The delving seems to be covered by Second-Story work, and the magic items by Use Magic Device.
Where is the crunch/rule for "reading unfamiliar languages"?
I haven't looked in the Errata or the DMG yet, but it seems to me this phrase is a vestige from some feature of the archetype that got cut out. |

No real crunch for it, other than just tangentially with Thieve's Cant... It's actually a hold-over from earlier editions. Originally in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, all rogues had a Read Languages skill. |

| #4Macv12Aug 15, 2015 17:49:06 | It's a holdover from the playtest, more accurately. Thieves used to have the ability to decipher any piece of writing with enough time. Like a day or something. I find that ability preposterous, but apparently someone agreed, because they cut it. |
