Throwing hammers, hand axes and Dwarfs.

I tried to look trough the forum, but the search function seems broken.

the rules state:

Dwarven Combat Training.  You have proficiency
with the battleaxe, handaxe, throwing hammer
and warhammer.

While in the weapons list the only thing simmilar would be the Light hammer that has the thrown property.  Do you think I would be correct in assuming that that is what throwing hammer refers to ?

Aslo:

Is there any reason that the Light hammer is 1D4, while the handaxe is 1D6 ? I know there is a small price difference of 3gp, but is that really enough to warrant a smaller damage die ?  Exept for damage type (bludgeoning vs piercing) there is no diference between the two.

For now I have allowed a player in a group to use the hammer with a D6 with the caveat that it gonna be rectified if it is somehow unbalanced/broken/wrong. I might be missing something obvious, but I am just starting out on the 5E ruleset, and I want to keep it as close to the rules as is fun for now

I totally read the title of this thread incorrectly.  I was wondering why you wanted to throw dwarves.  I was going to say that you should never toss a dwarf.

You are probably right, and that's what they meant.  It makes sense, really.  As far as why a d4?  They probably wanted a difference in damage between the light hammer, the mace and the warhammer.  After all, why buy a mace when a light hammer is just as damaging, can be thrown, is cheaper and weighs less?

Light hammer was called throwing hammer early in playtest and was changed in Playtest 121712 but the Dwarf feature never changed wording.

As for damage disparity between the light hammer and hand axe, all i know is that they also used to each deal 1d6 damage early in platest but at some point the light hammer was changed in Playtest 091913 when it got moved from martial to simple weapon..

Quite a few things on the weapons table don't make much sense, just gotta roll with it. Nod to the old-schoolers, I figure

I've changed light hammer to 1d6 for my games as well. I am OK with weapons that have the same properties dealing the same damage. That way a player can select the weapons they want based on cosmetic and character preference instead of damage potential. I'm thrilled that a warhammer, longsword, and battle axe all deal the same damage for instance.
