Throwing oil and fire it with a torch - Action + Bonus Action?

Hey there,

I just would like to know how "throwing oil" needs to be treated concerning bonus-actions.

Are the following statements correct?

1.) The bonus action can be used for two weapon fighting.

2.) Wepaons that have the "thrown" property are included by this. So we could throw two weapons that have this property, using an Action + Bonus Action.

3.) As oil counts as an improvised weapon, we could attack with it as well. Improvised weapons that doesn't have the "thrown" property can be thrown though, but have only a reach of 20 feet.

4.) Same for the torch.

Conclusion: I could throw a flask of oil as an improvised weapon on a creature, followed by another attack with a torch using the two-weapon-fighting style (action + bonus action).

Would be glad about answers!

I don't believe that either oil flasks or torches have the Light property, as required for two weapon fighting.

As a DM, I am a fan of the interpretation that thrown oil (or alchemist's fire, or acid, or bombs) is an attack a result of the Use an Object action that happens to be treated as an attack with an improvised weapon, but is not actually use of an improvised weapon.

The reason: I'd rather a Thief be able to use a bonus action to throw oil and then their attack to jab their oil-covered foe with a torch, or throw a bundle of dynamite alongside their normal "stab that guy with a rapier" attack than I would allow a high-level fighter with the dual wielder feat the ability to hurl 9 bundles of dynamite (or vials of alchemist fire, since I acknowledge not every DM goes quite as quasi-high-tech in their setting as I do in mine - even other DMs basing their setting off the same sources I base mine off of) in a single round.

How far away are you trying to setup this oil + torch combo?  Cause, I would allow you to throw oil out (so that it's still in your square but is spread out beyond it) and let you use your Free Object Interaction to dtop a torch as you move away from the oil.  Since it's all happening simultaneously, you shouldn't have to wait for the torch to hit the ground before you start moving away from it.

The description of oil in the equipment section states that it requires an action to throw it.

It's up to the Dungeon Master to decide if lighting the oil with your torch requires a subsequent action or if it can be done in tandem with the action you took to throw it.

Two-weapon fighting does not apply in this instance.

Two weapon fighting does not automatically apply. Though depending on individual GM, it might be applied by them.

Your GM milage may vary.
