| #1KippleSnacksSep 28, 2014 12:47:55 | The confusion comes from thrown weapons being "Ranged Attacks" but still "Melee Weapons".
For example the Battle Master's Lunging Attack lets you hit at range +5, so making an attack with a handaxe (melee weapon), would throwing it still be a melee weapon attack and let me get to 25 ft without disadvantage (of course still throwing the weapon)?
Alternatively, with Dueling, does it automatically turn off if I throw my same hand axe or do I get the +2 damage still? Would I instead be able to apply the Archery +2 to hit on a thrown weapon if not?

So the handaxe is a thrown weapon attack if it is thrown (Str is used for modifiers) and the Lunging Attack is not used because that applies to melee weapon attacks (holding onto the weapon). The duelling benefit does not apply when it's thrown because you're no longer 'weilding a melee weapon in one hand'. |

How? Dueling requires that you are 'wielding a melee weapon in one hand ... damage rolls with that weapon". If the weapon has been thrown, it's not in the hand any more. |

It's called Dueling, after all - close combat, not ranged or thrown. Although, duels did occur with pistols, so that might not be a big issue. Still 'in one hand'... |

| #8El_CondoroSep 28, 2014 19:09:29 | I have no problems with a thrown weapon applying modifiers (Str in the case of a hand axe) but I just don't think the Dueling modifier can be applied. |
| #9FluffyBunbunKittensSep 29, 2014 0:50:12 | Either they become ranged weapons and Archery applies, or they stay melee weapons and Duelist applies...
Actually, screw it, apply both, because who cares, throwing stuff is not the character's main form of attack anyways. |
| #10FrogReaverSep 29, 2014 0:47:10 | I'm of the opinion that dueling would work with a thrown handaxe but archery would not. Though I'd probably just let the player choose which bonus to apply since some feel it's a little ambiguous. By the way, a thrown weapon might could work really well with the eldright knight since he can get it back every turn.... |

| #12abs1nthSep 29, 2014 16:27:42 | I would say a handaxe can function both as a ranged and melee weapon when you choose to throw it acts as a ranged weapon so I would apply only the Archery bonus. |

| #14Jay_Ibero_911Sep 29, 2014 20:10:58 | A weapon that is both a melee AND ranged weapon still satisfies the PHB 146 statement. An OR statement is still true if both conditions are true. PHB 146 also defines ranged weapons as used to attack a target at a distance, which a thrown weapon is. So while they only appear once on the weapon table, by definition thrown weapons are both ranged and melee weapons, which does not contradict any other part of the rules. |

| #16El_CondoroSep 30, 2014 1:17:20 | Any with the 'thrown' property. The weapons table surely has them under the 'Simple melee weapons' subheading, but when they are thrown they get range and are thus ranged.
p. 146 of PHB. A melee weapon is used to attack a target within 5 feet of you, whereas a ranged weapon is used to attack a target at a distance.
A thrown weapon meets both requirements, depending on the way they are used. They are one or the other only - at that point in time. |
| #17AethererSep 30, 2014 6:06:37 | A melee weapon can also be ranged if given the value of thrown, using Str modifiers. Ranged weapons can be used in melee, but only as improvised.
Add the Light value to a thrown weapon for more confusion. A dagger is a meleé, thrown and light weapon. It uses Str or Dex for melee, and either for thrown. As for feats and specifics, none seem to fit the profile on this, either. It's not archery, and not dueling (despite being an ideal time to use it). |

| #19YunruSep 30, 2014 6:53:15 | Actually if it didm't say that then non-finese thrown weapons would use Dex by default. |
