Thrown Weapons one shot?

If a monster is armed with a throwing weapon (eg Orc with Javelin), does it only get 1 ranged attack?

(I guess same goes for player characters).

If thrown weapons are expended, can a PC recover them after a combat?

or must they seach for 1 minute with a 50% chance of recovering it - to make it consistent with Ammunition?

Yes, the throwing weapon is thrown at the target and cannot be thrown again unless it is retrieved.

Characters work the same way.

Thrown weapons are not ammunition.  So yes, all thrown weapons get to be retrieved.  Ammunition rules state that bolts and arrows (which are ammunition) for example are only 50% recoverable.  So if you use 10 you only get to recover 5.

I've heard of DM's and people arguing that thrown weapons should fall under the ammunition rules.  But I've never understood why.  Frankly I think that falls under Wheaton's Law considering that the gold cost of buying arrows vs even just 1 dagger is very different.  So you throw 2 daggers and you just lost.. 5 gold?  I don't think any sane DM would punish a player for throwing daggers around.  I mean sure, if the player throws the dagger into a volcano, well sorry but your dagger is gone.  But on a regular basis...

Ok, well you're free to have your opinion if you want to be paranoid about it and somehow accuse me of calling people that stuff lol.

I personally will just nod to SteveMND and point at his response which was spot on:

First: I've always played this as a shot fired with a weapon that has the Ammo property is usually one that has a long maximum range. A Thrown weapon has a much shorter maximum range.

Second: Ammo, is rather fragile (unless it's Magical).

So an ammo shot fired can be lost, or shattered against a wall, when fired. The 50% recovery rate is fair, in my opinion.

A thrown weapon can be recovered, since it's less fragile, and has a shorter maximum range.

monster weapons in 5e are typically not recoverable. So it doesn't matter how many the enemy has.

2ndly I have always played it such that you don't get back every thrown weapon

I thought i read somewhere that one of the books advised that monster equipment was typically not of any value (really worn rusted torn and not fit to be sold)

If one of your players is an accountant at heart, sure, let him pick up half the ammo the monsters fired, too.

Thrown weapons can be picked up (or pulled out of your arm, as the case may be) one-for-one.

Don't ask me to let you sell them for cash, unless I've got a collector or expert researcher NPC coming down the pike who wants to examine the stuff for some obscure trait.

Come to think of it, they are metal and could be melted down to make part of a Trade Goods bar.  Is your campaign cash-starved?  This might be a lead to the normal recycling / resale value.
