#1 Kalthoon Sep 15, 2014 20:32:04	The Tiefling Passive of Infernal Legacy says   "Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell once per day as a 2nd-level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you can also cast the darkness spell once per day."   Question is does casting Hellish Rebuke or Darkness this way mean you have to use a spell slot?   Example: I am a level 3 Tiefling Warlock and I have 2 spell slots.  I am attacked, take damage, and use Hellish Rebuke from my Tiefling Trait.  I did not learn Hellish Rebuke from available spells when leveling up.   If you are a barbarian, fighter or monk (classes without spell slots), does that mean you can't use this racial passive?   I am new and tried to look online and through forums.  I'm sorry if this was asked and already answered.    Thank you for any help with this.
#2 Macv12 Sep 15, 2014 20:59:29	If you expended spell slots, that would be the same as just knowing the spell, and there's no reason it should be limited to 1/day. The racial feature gives you a slot-free "daily power" to just cast the spell whenever. You don't need spell slots because the ability is written right in your blood, not something just anyone could do.
#3 2Chlorobutanal Sep 15, 2014 21:02:34	No spell slots required.   Any class can use these abilities.  If you're a spellcaster, it doesn't use any slots to cast hellish rebuke or darkness from your Tiefling feature.  If you're not a spellcaster, you can still do it.   If you happen to be a spellcaster, you still have to "learn" darkness or hellish rebuke from your class to use them with spell slots.  Otherwise, you just get them 1/day, just like a Barbarian.
#4 Kalthoon Sep 15, 2014 21:13:31	Thank you for the answers.  They both make sense to me.  As a newer player I was confused a bit.  The "once per day" made me question the spell slot requirement in addition to how other classes could benefit from this if they can't cast spells.   Any other opinions would be good too.    I'm glad there is a place newer players like me can go for good advice.   Thanks again!
