| #1ThurazorOct 01, 2014 15:28:47 | I've been working on a DM character for myself after I hear some decent discussions with friends about Adventurer's League allowing people to create Necromancers and the other folks being unable to deny me to use my talents to create Undead. Well, I'm looking through Necromancy spells and search for the description of Trap the Soul and...
Nothing. So, I checked out someone else's book and...
Nothing. So, we scanned through the other spells in the book in case it was misspelled and...
Nothing.
Does the spell exist, and if so, does anyone have any idea what it does exactly? I know almost all of the spells have changed since 3.0/3.5/4th Edition... and I am just trying to figure things out to plan for my character. |

It was folded into imprisonment, and they forgot to update the suggestions. |

The main use of trap the soul in my opinion was to extract services from creatures trapped in the gems. Planar binding now requires an expensive gem as a consumed component. The functionality of the two spells are very similar - in 3e, trap the soul was essentially a more effective version of planar binding. Trap the soul was never a very robust "imprisoning" spell, because simply crushing the gem released the creature.
Trap the soul and planar binding are both conjuration spells. Imprisonment is an abjuration (and I believe the old "binding" spell was an enchantment - but it was almost completely equivalent to the "new" imprisonment options, such as "minimum containment").
Regardless of semantics, if you're looking for a long term "trapping" spell, look at imprisonment.
If you're looking to temporarily "summon" powerful monsters to aid you, planar binding seems to be the best that Wizards can do for now. It requires significantly more "casting time" than simply crushing a gem, though. ("Marilith, I choose you!")
As the OP is talking about necromancy, are you sure you're not confusing trap the soul with magic jar or soul bind? Magic jar exists in the 5e PHB, but there is no soul bind spell in 5e (yet). |
