True Polymorph and Exp

So True Polymorph replaces all statistics. Does this mean that if cast on a player, they no longer have a level (instead having a CR), or would they be level 1 (since they have 0 exp thus according to the table they're lvl 1)?

And in either case: Does this mean they can no longer gain exp?

 

EDIT: In fact, one could argue that the rules that apply to Player Characters are more specific than rules that apply to all creatures.

So... You'd end up with a lvl 1 character, complete with classes, that just happens to be a monster race?
