Unarmored Defense conflict

From what I see, the common wisdom is that a Monk/Barbarian must choose between using Dex+Con or Dex+Wis for their AC.

But it was brought to my attention that the MultiClass rules don't seem to agree.  It seems you can't get it again if you already have it.

So a Monk/Barb could use their armor or Dex+Wis

A Barb/Monk could use their armor or Dex+Con

But once you have one version of UAD, you simply don't get the second one.  Does that sound about right?

I understand why they made that part of the game, but that doesn't make sense in a thematic perspective. A Monk is trained to avoid blows by knowing how to move and when. A Barbarian uses their physical endurance to have blows deal negligible damage (Roll with the punches, so to speak) So, wouldn't it make sense to have them both work? I understand that this would be ridiculously powerful mechanics-wise, but thematically, it would be perfectly reasonable. As for what you brought up, I would let them gain both, but only benefit from one or the other.

I hadn't noticed that, but  page 164 of the PHB states "If you already have the Unarmored Defense feature, you can't gain it again from another class."

Seems pretty clear.  You get the first type of unarmored defense you qualify for and can never benefit from another.

There is no point in not being able to gain both versions, as there is no way to use any of those together.

I think they could have allowed you to have more than one version of unarmoured defense; they would just need to note that the feature uses the standard rule (from page 14 of the PHB) about using different methods of calculating AC.  The net result would be just using whichever unarmoured defense formula you preferred.

It would just say something like:
"If you gain the Unarmoured Defense class feature from more than one class, you choose which one to use when calculating your AC."

They might have avoided doing this just to keep it simple (so that you don't switch to a different formula just because you picked up a shield).

By RAW, you only get your first one.  but i see no harm in allowing you to choose.  I also allow people to swap their save proficencies (i.e. wizard dips fighter and trades wis saves for con).

I would also allow you to go wis+con for AC.  Cause why not?
