Unimportant Rules Questions: Such as, "Trident. Glorified Spear?"

We all have those oddball rules questions that, when you get right down to it, are not really that important.  What are some of those fairly unimportant yet head scratching questions anyone else has had?

One of those little useless questions that has been bothering me.  What is the practical purpose of the Trident (as the weapon itself, not "Oh there is this Trident only magic item")?  As far as I can read, the only difference between the Trident and a Spear is A: It costs more.  B: It weighs more.  C: It's Military instead of Simple, so less classes can use it right out of the box.

Similarly, while both are Military weapons, the Morningstar as far as one can tell by the equipment table has no difference to the War Pick except for, again, costing more and weighing more.

Am I overlooking some niche uses of the Trident and Morningstar that could not be performed by the cheaper/more accessible alternatives?  What are some other examples of those little headscratchers leaving people wondering just what to think of them?

Another is why anyone would take a mace over a quarterstaff. This has been dealt with in another thread, but to summarise: mace vs. quarterstaff (5 gp vs. 2 sp; same damage; same weight; quarterstaff is versatile 1d8 damage when used 2-handed). So for less cost you get greater versatility and sometimes damage. This is all mechanical - my clerics will still take a mace over a quarterstaff every time.

I think it was a deliberate statement from the designers that you shouldn't just pay attention to mechanics

Gandalf used a quarterstaff one-handed while wielding his sword in the other hand.

Yeah, and he died. Sure, he got better, but he still died.

If your clerics won't use a Quarterstaff, they obviously aren't taking the Nature Domain to get the free druid cantrip. Turn that Quarterstaff into a Magic weapon and Two-Weapon Fight your way to victory. 1d8 per attack.

Sorry, I completely blanked on the rules. Quarterstaffs used to be a Double Weapon back in 3.5, allowing you to get an Off-Hand Attack once per Full Attack Action.

How do you concentrate on two quarterstaff buffs at once?

You can't cast Shillelagh on both, it ends if you cast it a second time, or let go of the quarterstaff (or club)
