Using the Net as a melee weapon?

I am looking in the PHB and the net is listed under 'ranged martial weapons'.  However, it has the thrown property, which states that you can make a ranged attack with the weapon.  So, does this mean I can use the net to make melee attacks?

It doesn't normally do damage, but it restrains someone who is hit by it (and I assume the person using the net will no longer be holding the net once it is restraining a bad guy.)

Also, based on the fact that the net is (5/15) for its range, any ranged attack made with a net will be at disadvantage, since the first value means the target is within melee range with you.  Correct?

Broken down:

  • Martial means that the net requires more specialized training to use effectively.
  • Ranged means that the net is used to attack targets at a distance, and that you add your Dexterity modifier to your attack roll when attacking with it.
  • Special means that there are unusual rules governing the net's use (automatically restraining target on a successful hit).
  • Thrown means that you throw the net to make a ranged attack.
  • Range of 5/15 means that you are assumed to be at a disadvantage when attacking with a net.

What does it all mean?

The net requires Dexterity to manipulate, and is best suited for use in situations where you are able to obtain some sort of advantage before making an attack (which is fair, considering a successful attack with a net reduces the target's speed to 0, attack rolls against the target have advantage, the target's attack rolls have disadvantage, and the target has disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws—automatically).
