| #1HelnamJun 16, 2015 16:33:25 | So I play a Fiend warlock (so I have wall of fire) and my buddy plays a wizard. He just got high enough level to cast wall of force. We were using it mainly to cast a dome around some mosters to take them out of the fight and then deal with them after their friends are dead. So what would happen if he delayed his turn to right after mine. I cast a circle wall of fire (damage inward) and then he casts a dome wall of force same location. Because they're the same size does everything in there just burn for 10 rounds granted they are not immune? |
| #2jaelisJun 16, 2015 19:08:28 | Nasty combo. Easy answer is that it works. But if a DM found it troubling it would not be crazy to rule that you can't maintain concentration on a spell effect that is entirely blocked by a wall of force. That limits some other tricks too, like summoning some creatures to fight for you while you hide inside a WoF. |
| #3NevvurJun 16, 2015 19:28:42 | It is a nice combo, but use it sparingly! I think you're at less risk of a DM house ruling concentration through wall of force, than you are of the DM rebalancing encounters this combo might otherwise trivialize.
As a DM, I don't like surprise combos. In my experience, the people who like to spring them have an adversarial approach to the DM-player relationship. "If I tell him what I'm planning, he's just going to find a way to counter it, so I'll keep it secret so I can at least use it once." The truth is, the more I know about the party's capabilities, the more rewarding combat will be for everyone involved. In the case of this combo, knowing the wiz and lock might use it, I might add a cluster of enemies specifically to give them the opportunity to use it, rather than laying it on top of my BBEG. Point being, you should chat with your DM about it. |
| #4HelnamJun 16, 2015 20:08:35 | Yeah, he was there when we thought of it. We were actually fighting fire immunes when it came up as a "oh wow too bad I can't do this" type thing. I don't think we'll use it too much as it would just seems kinda of silly... Or well I'll say we won't over use it, still a fun strat to keep in the back pocket. We did something like this when we knew we were going to fight a lich. Plan was he(wizard) casts banish on the lich (after we burn his legendary saves) giving me the 10 rounds needed to cast inverted magic circle where the lich will return. On turn 9 or so our bard casts silence in that location so pretty much the lich comes back to being trapped in a small area and silenced. The plan was to use read thoughts to question him (for a long time) and hopefully find out where his phylactery is. |
| #5NevvurJun 16, 2015 20:17:34 | Glad to hear it, and I like that plan with the lich. How did it work out? |
| #6OoftaMegJun 16, 2015 20:44:13 | The problem that I see is that they intersect. A wall of fire is a burning ring 20 feet high, a domed wall of force is only 10 ft high at the center. Although I guess you might be able to make a decagon (yes I googled 10 sided polygon). I'd have to draw it out.
Up to your dm on whether or not the fact that they intersect interferes, in previous editions I don't believe they could. |
| #7NevvurJun 16, 2015 21:30:47 | Wall of Fire: "... a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick." It can be made to fit in a 10 foot radius hemisphere. |
| #8HelnamJun 16, 2015 22:59:26 | Good point Nevvur. Oh and the lich was rolling really high on his checks so we were not able to get through all his legendary resisits so we switched and just killed him... he rolled like 4 15+ in a row... sucked. He was a toned down lich with only up to level 6 spells, no power word kill to deal with. This week we're getting a full power MM one, should be fun maybe we'll try again. Btw how do you guys rule the countering a counterspell? lots of ways to look at it, I like the idea that would you have to make 15 or 20DC dex chance to counter a reation spell. maybe 15 for bonus action spell 20 for reation, obviously no check for a normal action. Also how do you guys feel about being able to cast counterspell when you're already casting a spell? I personally say if they do not both have somatics but that's just me. |
| #9melloredJun 17, 2015 9:13:16 | There's plenty of spells that work with wall of force. Like cloud kill, insect plauge, or even cloud of daggers (for big creatures). And yea, it's a nasty spell. Even without wall of fire.
But mostly, as a DM, i just return the tactic. A few enemy wizard will try the same thing against your fighter. |

| #13Byakugan01Jun 18, 2015 5:27:01 | How do you cast counterspell on your own turn (as a bonus action) if you already used an action to cast a non-cantrip spell?
You cant even cast a magic missile if you are hasted or use action surge and already cast shield or misty step. |
