Warding Bond

I don't see anything in the spell description that bars you from casting this spell on yourself (you just have to wear both rings).  If this is allowed, exactly what effect would it have on your taking damage?

You get the +1 bonus to AC and Saving Throws, and then you get Resistance to all damage.  However, if you take damage, you take that damage again it would seem.  Are both instances of damage halved?  Do you take half of the halved damage the second time?  I'm so confused, but I'm likely making it more complicated than it actually is.

What are your thoughts?  Would you allow a Cleric in yoru campaign to cast this spell on herself?

I don't think its intended to work on you as the spell creates a mystic connection between you and the target which ends if you become separated by more than 60 feet. I know i wouldn't allow it IMC.

It looks RAW, though as plauge said, douptfully RAI.

But yes, you would take 1/2 damage * 2.

Thus if you take 10 damage, you take 5 + 5 = 10 damage.

If you take 11 damgae, you take 5 (rounded down) + 5 (rounded down) damage = 10.

Note too that you would make 2 concentration saves at 1/2 the DC (minimum 10).  So that's probably it's main feature.

...you're over thinking it.

Yes you can cast it on yourself, technically, but a DM may rule otherwise.

But if a DM does allow it, you get +1 AC and Saves, and when a bad guy rolls an odd amount of damage, you take 2 less than you normally would (since you round down and then double it). Kinda crummy for a 2nd-level spell, but at least it doesn't require concentration...?

Of note: If you have Resistance from another source, or Resistance to a certain type of damage and then take that damage, while this spell is active, that Resistance is basically negated. The rules say that whenever you have "double" Resistance you only count it once (instead of twice which would effectively halving then quartering your damage), then you take the second instance of damage. So, while this spell is active, you can never truly benefit from Resistance

Hmm...

If you have resistance to all damage, and take damage though the bond, is that damage halved?

i.e. your a cleric/bear barbarian.  You put warding bond on the squshy wizard and then rage.

The wizard get's hit for 40 damage.  He's resistant so he takes 20.

Your resistant to all (but psycic), damage.  Do you also take 20, or do you take 10?

Still seems hokey. In the realm of "Wish+Simulacrum for infinite clones" sort of whacky.

But hey, something a DM should be aware of (and a player should CERTAINLY ask their DM how that interaction works!). Even if their weak argument is to prevent odd shenanigans!

I would not allow it in my game, and even if it were allowed, I wouldn't recommend it. It's a waste of a 2nd level spell.

Also, could a cleric cast warding bond on more then one creature at a time?

No comment on what happens if the caster has resistance?

Hey Mello, and OP! Idea: Store Warding bond in a ring of Spell storage. Use suggestion/dominate on BBEG. Have him take the ring from you, and cast it on whoever is the half-orc in the party (maybe giving the ring to the half-orc, too). Have the half-orc cast Warding Bond (via spell or Ring) on another person, maybe a half-orc (that isn't the Assassin). Have the Assassin, erm, assassinate one of the half-orcs so all three basically take a butt-load of damage. Half-orcs survive. ??? Profit.

Or, alternatively, you can have some fun with this combo with Mello's favorite spell, Magic Jar...Possess a bad guy, cast warding bond on other bad guy, assassinate yourself to have BOTH bad guys die, and you can make a save to have your soul return to your jar...No Ring of Spell Storing required!

(see, this is why I'd rather just nip this in the bud by saying the spells stack, even if they're not casting it  But! It is interesting!)

Speaking of which...

If you use magic jar, cast warding bond, then leave the body, where would the damage go?

How about if your familiar casts it?

Got reply from Jeremy Crawford;

@Plaguescarred Q bout Warding Bond spell if target and cleric has resistance, is damage halved twice or only once?
‏@JeremyECrawford Resistance is applied only once to any instance of damage. See the Player's Handbook, page 197.

FWIW I asked a follow up question as to wether it was one or two instance of damage.

I dunno, I'm a little too wordy for twitter character limits I've found.  Let's see what he says to your follow up.

Ok Jeremy clarified;

‏@JeremyECrawford Ah, I misunderstood your original question. If the cleric has resistance, nothing in the rules says it doesn't work.

still doesn't make it a good spell.
