Warlock multiclass slot level

We have just had an argument about Warlock multiclassing and I wonder if anyone can help.

The multiclassing section of the rulebook says that Pact Magic slots can be used to cast spells obtained from Spellcasting and vice versa.

His interpretation: he can take Warlock 2 to get two Pact Magic slots, and use those to cast any spells he obtains from his other class, as literally stated.

My interpretation: taking Warlock 2 gives him 2 Pact Magic slots but as per the Warlock table they are level 1 slots. Taking more Wizard levels does not increase the level of these slots since he is not advancing on the Warlock table. So he can only use them for level 1 Pact Magic or Spellcasting spells because nothing in the multiclassing rules says that levels are disregarded.

Which is it?

What a weird disagreement. So this person thinks they should be able to use their level 1 Warlock slots on a level 9 Wizard spell? Hell no. They're still spell slots. The source of them is different, but they're the same game element. You spend them according to their level as you would any other slot.

Am I even reading you right...?

Yes. His argument is that once he has level 6 etc. spells from Wizard, he has "obtained them from his Spellcasting feature", and can use Pact Magic slots to cast them as literally stated.

That's dumb. Ridiculously overpowered. You're now regenerating your super high-level limited slots multiple times per short rest. 7 or more level 9 spell slots per day. Nooooo, no sir, don't need any o' that.

You are allowed to use spell slots from Pact Magic. As spell slots. According to the rules of spell slots. The provision for using Pact Magic slots as Spellcasting slots says nothing about ignoring their level in the process. I have no idea where they got that idea. Aside from wishful thinking, I mean.

Setting aside power, he'd be right if and only if you could casts say, 4th level spells from 1st level slots. Pact Magic gives you refreshing slots of a particular level, and while you can use them on Spellcasting spells, you can't ignore the size of the slot. Your interpretation is right.

First issue is the warlock spell slots can not be higher then lvl 5 spell's per the warlock class. That being said, under multiclassing spell slot progression list every casting class with the exception of warlock. Which leads one to believe that level in warlock do not affect your spell slot in another class nor vice versa, which means at level 2 warlock he could use his warlock slots to cast level one spell's. In no class is there a way to recover spell's sixth level or higher with out taking a long rest, so even if it was RAI to give warlock spell slot progression with 18 levels of wizard, he would only have 5th level pact slots.

Also, note: taking multiclass levels in Warlock does *not* increase your caster level for the purposes of the multiclass spell slots levels.

So, a level 4 Wizard who takes a level of Warlock is not gaining 3rd level spell slots, but does gain 1 first level Pact Magic spell slot, which refreshes on a short rest.

He can only use the slots to cast spells of that level or lower. So he can cast lvl 1 wizard spells using the warlock spell slots. Is that what you are asking?

There is a reason the warlock spell slots all have a level associated with them....

There are also explicit rules that tell you that you cannot cast a higher level spell in a lower level spell slot.....
