Warlock's Hex and Short rests

I suppose the concensus is that Hex can be maintained between combats as the duration can be up to 24 hours.

What about what happens when you take a short rest while maintaining Hex?

Does the slot used by the Hex spell remain used? Or do you regain all slots while maintaining concentration on Hex?

I had assumed you regain your slots... is there a reason to think otherwise?

If a cleric casts Gentle Repose, do they recover that spell slot the next day? Surely yes...?

Gentle Repose isn't maintained by concentration so I don't think it's a fair comparison.

Is there anything you can point to in the rules text that leads you to believe that a spell slot doesn't follow the general rules for regaining spell slots if it was used to cast a long-term concentration spell?

Are there any other spells this applies to? If it is only Hex I wouldn't expect to find much in the general rules.

Comparing to Gentle Repose/Mage Armor that stick after a short rest makes sense but they don't require concentration.

I suppose it can be tough to maintain a concentration spell over several fights and refreshing the slot isn't game breaking while leaving warlocks with only one usable slot per short rest when using Hex seems kinda stupid.

Seeing as even the designers seemed confused about how it's supposed to work after a fight is finished...it seemed like a fair question

You recover the spell slot.

Additional example would be Suggestion.  8 hour duration but requires concentration.

Are you resting if you are concentrating? Sounds like a check could be required...

Except concentration doesn't require any special effort. It never interferes with anything except itself, and as such you can even cast spells (that don't require concentration) while concentrating, without any checks, even in a pitched battle. I'd imagine sitting still or swigging water or so on takes even less effort than that.

Seems pretty clear you can concentrate while resting. But can you rest while concentrating? There's only limited things you can do while resting...

Concentrating is a non-action, so I don't see why not. I assume anything I can do while humming "99 bottles of beer on the wall," I can do while concentrating.

So the short rest says you can't "do anything more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds." Is concentrating on a spell more strenuous than those things? I could see a DM ruling yes. I'd say no myself, and feel justified. But I don't know that I could say that a DM who disagreed was clearly wrong.

The only normal things that break concentration are casting another concentration spell, taking damage, and being incapacitated or killed. DMs may rule that other things distract/mess with your concentration ( PHB uses a wave crashing over you while you are on a ship being tossed around as an example. ) I can't see how resting would break concentration. It is pretty much the opposite of something that would break concentration.

Part of the problem with the term concentration is that I think some people picture the caster furiously focusing on keeping the spell effect in place, with little beads of sweat pouring down their brow from the effort when the rules don't say anything like that.

On the bright side for me because I am an advocate of racial features doing something, it seems to give the elvish trance feature a boost since an elf doesn't sleep and is fully aware of their surroundings vs non trance casters who are incapacitated when they go to sleep. I'd never thought about it before is all.

When in doubt, roll it out! (a d20 that is)

But don't you need a target for hex? Which is probably already dead when you are able to take a short rest...

Or does it just run as long as you concentrate on it?

I would rule it needs a target. Otherwise I cast it when I wake up, take a short rest, and have a free Hex ready for the next 7 hours. Cheesy.

Hmmm....  I just noticed that the move does not require 'death', just 0 hps.   I understand why, impressed they caught the difference.  Cool.

There is a post on Sage Advice from Mike Mearls that you can maintain concentration on Hex while  taking a short rest, provided you do not sleep during that short rest.

http://www.sageadvice.eu/2014/09/20/concentration-during-rest/

Normally I don't take Mike's word for gospel (Jeremy Crawford is the final say on rules clarifications) but since they put it up on Sage Advice, I'm willing to accept that as the defacto answer.

That website is just a fan collection of tweeted responses, not something which adds officiality or implied accuracy to the tweets beyond what the developer imparts by the fact of their responding in the first place
