warlock shield?

I ran accross a wierd little glitch ...

 

At level 1 you can take a human warlock with the shield master feat and make the most confusing sitation ever ...

 

Shield master does not require profienncy with shield nor does it grant it ... so what happens?

You get the benefits of shield master. But you don't get the +2AC from the shield.

Pg 144 says if you aren't proficient with armor, you get the AC benefit but you have disadvantage on Str and Dex checks, attacks and saves, plus you can't cast spells. It looks to me like they mean to include shields with armor here, but I guess some might disagree.

Shields are specifically mentioned in the section dealing with Armor proficiency.
