Hello!

So currently I am the DM for my game but I have been looking through stuff because when this game is over I am handing the title over to someone else because I want a character. So I have been looking at things to make a character that is both awesome and fun, stat wise and rp wise. Anyways I was checking out the idea of multiclassing and was thinking of doing a bard and multiclassing into something else since bards are the best and easiest to do that with (since usually multiclassing is kinda lame) And I stumbled into warlock and was looking at their stuff and found an interesting paragraph:

"To cast one of your warlock spells of 1st level or higher you must expend a spell slot. You regain ALL expended spell slots after completeing a short or long rest."

This seems sort of OP to me?

So I looked it up. Did some searching around and all I found was people saying that it only let's you regain ONE spell slot.....I have read over it about a thousand times now in confusion and it clearly says ALL.

And then I got to thinking of multiclassing one level of warlock...the words are so vague and normally a class is very specific with that sort of thing and would say the class specifically regains all expended warlock spell slots...but I just can't get over the word ALL there... I haven't asked the future DM because he currently is a player in my game aaaand I don't exactly want all of my players to take this possibly wonderful thing I have found and break my game...

Anyways am I delusional or does it say ALL? and how does this work?? is there some ruling for it somewhere that I haven't found? Or would it be up to the DM?

and before anyone complains yes I know multiclassing suuucks blah blah blah.

anyways some insight on this would be greatly appreciated thanks!

It is all spell slots, but only those you gain from pact magic. There are not many of those (typically one or two at most lower levels). The example of multiclassing shows how that works if you're a spellcaster / warlock.

No, you don't regain your Bard spell slots.  Why? Because that's ridiculous and this game is not built on finding exploits.  It's obviously not the intent, so it doesn't work.

It's like Tempest said: the multiclass rules treat spell casting and pact magic as different sources of spells and spell slots, but allow you to use either set of spells  with either set of slots.

Pact Magic and Spellcasting genuinely are different abilities. They only interact in the particular way that the multiclassing rules say: You can use slots from one to cast spells known from the other. Other than that, they both need to use their own separate rules for spell preparation and slot recovery. So you recover Pact Magic slots per the Pact Magic rules, and Bard slots per the Spellcasting rules.

Some relevant rules:

1.  "The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have.  The table also shows what the level of those slots is; all o f your spell slots are the same level. To cast one o f your warlock spells o f 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest."

2.  "The Bard table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot o f the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest."

3.  "If you multiclass but have the Spellcasting feature from only one class, you follow the rules as described in that class."

4.  "If you have both the Spellcasting class feature and the Pact Magic class feature from the warlock class, you can use the spell slots you gain from the Pact Magic feature to cast spells you know or have prepared from classes with the Spellcasting class feature, and you can use the spell slots you gain from the Spellcasting class feature to cast w arlock spells you know."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we have quite a conundrum.  Suppose we are a level 1 warlock and a level 1 bard.

Since pack magic is not the "spellcasting" feature i do not refer to any of the rules relating to multiclassing two classes with the spell casting feature as rule 3 states.

"3.  "If you multiclass but have the Spellcasting feature from only one class, you follow the rules as described in that class."

Problem 1:  The game tells me I have 1 spell slot based on the warlock rules and 2 spell slots based on the bard rules.  This is the first contradiction.

Solution 1:  Rule 4 informs us that we can have spell slots from the pact magic feature and spell slots from the spellcasting feature.  However, this just solidifies the contradiction because the rules in one place explicitly state I have 1 spell slot.  They state in another place I have 2.  Now in the multiclass section they seem to be stating I have 1+2=3 spell slots.  But alas, the multiclass section also tells you to go back to the spellcasting feature class to determine your spell slots.  Which goes back to having 2 spell slots again.

As it stands I'd say the rule can't even get their story straight on how many spell slots a level 1 bard and level 1 warlock should have.  I'd say that makes anything to do with a warlock that has other spell casting sources be a DM judgment call.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So how does this relate to spell recharging?  Well, most of us have found the easiest way to avoid all the headaches these conflicting rules create is to simply add one word to each section.  In the bard spell casting section any and everything gets modified by "bard".  The same goes for the warlock pact magic section.  Everything that can be modified by "warlock" gets modified by warlock.

Once you do that everything else falls nicely in place.  Just keep in mind if you do try to push the this is the way it's written thing the DM will have a judgment call to make on how many spell slots you have and could pick for you to use the warlock table to solely determine that even for a level 19 wizard level 1 warlock....
